Where Wisdom Begins

Today's Word of Wonder: Reverence
The Scripture Spotlight for Today
"The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom; all who follow his precepts have good understanding. To him belongs eternal praise."
— Psalm 111:10 (NIV)
The Devotion: More Than Just Being Smart
We live in a world that worships intelligence. We celebrate people who have high IQs, massive amounts of data, and the ability to win an argument. But knowledge, on its own, is not wisdom. You can know everything about the world and still make foolish, destructive choices.
Today's WOW scripture cuts straight to the source of true understanding. It tells us that wisdom doesn't start with a degree, a book, or an algorithm; it starts with the "fear of the Lord."
This word "fear" is not about terror or cowering. It's about Reverence—a profound, respectful awe for the power, perfection, and holiness of God. It is the recognition that He is the Creator and we are the creation. When you stand in awe of God, you instinctively recognize your place, and you become humble enough to listen.
This posture of humility is what makes wisdom possible. The second line promises: "all who follow his precepts have good understanding." Our understanding doesn't come from seeking shortcuts or outsmarting others; it comes directly from living in obedience to God's guiding principles.
A WOW Moment is realizing that if you feel confused, lost, or lacking direction, you don't need more information; you need more Reverence. When you focus your One Thing (Psalm 27:4) on worshipping and obeying the Source of all truth, clarity and sound judgment will inevitably follow.
Wonder Prompt (Actionable Reflection)
Think of a challenging decision you are facing right now where you feel you lack wisdom.
- Reframe the Question: Instead of asking, "What should I do?" ask, "What decision would best demonstrate my reverence for God?"
- Commit to spending five minutes today not asking for the answer, but simply focusing your mind on God's holiness and power. How does that shift in focus change your perspective on the problem?
