Today's Word of Wonder: Hope
The Scripture Spotlight for Today
"And hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us."
— Romans 5:5 (NIV)
The Devotion: Hope with a Guarantee
Think about the feeling of relying on something—or someone—only to have it fail you. That feeling of disappointment, or even shame, is what happens when we place our hope in things that are too fragile: a job promotion, a political outcome, or a person’s promises. That kind of hope is fragile because its source is external.
But today’s WOW scripture gives us a guarantee. It states plainly: "hope does not put us to shame."
Why can Paul make such an audacious promise? Because Christian hope isn't a wish; it's a certainty based on an internal reality.
The source of this unshakable hope is revealed in the second part of the verse: "God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit."
This is not a tiny trickle or a controlled measure of love; it is "poured out"—it is an overflow. The proof of your hope isn't found in your circumstances or your ability to be optimistic; it's found in the undeniable presence of the Holy Spirit, who perpetually floods your innermost being with the evidence of God's love.
When you feel doubt creeping in, or when the outside world feels chaotic, remember this WOW Moment: Your hope is not built on what you see, but on what you possess. You have an anchor within you, secured by the continuous, boundless love of God, delivered and guaranteed by the Holy Spirit. This is a hope that will never let you down.
Wonder Prompt (Actionable Reflection)
Sometimes we need to physically remind ourselves of the presence the Holy Spirit guarantees.
- Take a moment to place your hand over your heart. Breathe slowly and deeply for sixty seconds.
- As you feel the calm, say this truth out loud: "God’s love has been poured out into my heart."
- How does this physical and verbal declaration change the way you view the challenge in front of you today?
