Today's Word of Wonder: Recognition

The Scripture Spotlight for Today

"When he was at the table with them, he took bread, gave thanks, broke it and began to give it to them. Then their eyes were opened and they recognized him..."— Luke 24:30-31 (NIV)

The Devotion: Jesus at the Dinner Table

The story of the Road to Emmaus is fascinating. These two disciples walked for seven miles with the resurrected Jesus. They heard Him teach the Scriptures. They felt their hearts burn within them. Yet, they didn't know who He was.

When did the lightbulb turn on? Not during the sermon. Not during the walk. It happened at dinner.

It was in the simple, ordinary, everyday act of tearing a loaf of bread that "their eyes were opened." This teaches us a profound truth for our "Miracles in the Ordinary" week: God is often most visible in the common things.

The WOW Moment today is realizing that your kitchen table is a place of revelation. Every time you eat, you are witnessing a biological miracle (dead matter sustaining living tissue) and a spiritual truth (God providing for His children). We often look for God in the "spectacular"—the conferences, the miracles, the loud worship. But Jesus wants to meet you in the sandwich you eat at your desk or the pasta you boil for dinner. He is the Guest at every meal.

Wonder Prompt (Actionable Reflection)

We often "inhale" our food while scrolling on our phones.

  • Action: Choose one meal (or snack) today to eat in "Sacred Slowness." Put the phone away. Look at the food. Smell it. As you take the first bite, whisper: "Thank You, Lord, for this life."

  • Shift: Notice how a mundane act becomes a moment of worship when you add gratitude to the menu.

  • Prayer: "Lord, thank You for my daily bread. Forgive me for rushing through the gifts You give me. Open my eyes today—just like the disciples at Emmaus—to recognize Your goodness in every bite I take. Amen."
