Today's Word of Wonder: Sustenance

The Scripture Spotlight for Today

"Very truly I tell you, the one who believes has eternal life. I am the bread of life."
— John 6:47-48 (NIV)

The Devotion: Fueling Your Soul Forever

We spend so much time consumed with the mechanics of daily life. What will I eat for lunch? How will I pay that bill? How will I get through this stressful meeting? We are focused on temporary sustenance, and rightly so—it keeps us going.

But what fuels your eternal life?

In today's WOW scripture, Jesus makes two profound statements that completely reframe our spiritual focus:

  1. The Absolute Promise: "Very truly I tell you, the one who believes has eternal life." Notice the tense. It does not say "will get eternal life someday." It says the believer has it right now. Eternal life is not a future reward; it's a present reality that begins the moment we place our faith in Him. It gives us a foundation of absolute certainty, today.
  2. The Sustaining Source: "I am the bread of life." In the context of the time, bread was the absolute essential for survival. Jesus claims to be the essential sustenance for our spiritual survival—the food that nourishes our souls forever. Everything else we chase—achievement, approval, temporary pleasures—is like a snack; it satisfies for a moment, but then we are hungry again.

A WOW Moment is realizing that if you are constantly seeking something outside of Christ to sustain your joy, your peace, or your purpose, you are looking for temporary nourishment. When you rely on the Bread of Life, your life is fueled by a source that never runs out, guaranteeing you both fullness of joy (as we read in Psalm 16:11) and life that is to the full (as promised in John 10:10).

Wonder Prompt (Actionable Reflection)

Our natural instinct is to rely on our own efforts and resources.

  • What "temporary food" (a distraction, a worry, or a striving task) are you running to right now to find peace or satisfaction?

  • Take a moment to consciously stop. How can you spend five minutes today resting in the present reality that you already have eternal life, and that your ultimate sustenance is guaranteed?
