Interior Surface Refinement

Today's Word of Wonder: Refinement
The Scripture Spotlight for Today
"Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice. Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you." — Ephesians 4:31-32 (NIV)
The Devotion: The Drywall Finish
In interior finish carpentry and construction, drywall mudding is a multi-step craft dedicated to elimination and concealment. A wall is made up of separate gypsum boards joined by jagged gaps and dimpled by sharp metal screws. To achieve code-compliant monolithic surfaces, a finisher layers paper tape and mud compound over the gaps, allows it to cure, and meticulously sands the surface. This process of continuous Refinement takes a jagged, multi-piece assembly and unifies it into a single, perfectly smooth plane that is finally ready for paint.
The WOW Moment today is realizing that Sanding is Part of the Architecture.
When the Holy Spirit moves into a life, He inherits our rough edges. We carry internal seams—the gaps where our expectations met disappointment, or the sharp screw-heads of old wounds. If left raw, our interactions with the world will be sharp, abrasive, and biting. Ephesians 4 tells us to "get rid of all bitterness, rage, and anger." This is the spiritual equivalent of the sander.
The refinement process can sometimes feel uncomfortable. When the Holy Spirit prompts you to apologize, to drop a grudge, or to slow down your tongue, you are feeling the sander smoothing out a rough seam. Today, the miracle in the ordinary is the supernatural softening of your character. Because Christ is mudding over your past cracks, your responses to difficult people are no longer jagged and reactive—they are smooth, seamless, and filled with compassion.
Wonder Prompt (Actionable Reflection)
Today, practice The Interior Sanding Protocol.
- Action: Find a completely smooth wall surface nearby and lightly run your palm across it. As you feel its seamless texture, identify one sharp emotion or bitter memory that has been making your attitude feel abrasive this week. Mentally hand that crack to the Holy Spirit and say: "Lord, apply Your grace to this rough spot. Sand down my reactions today."
- Shift: Notice how quickly your internal defensiveness drops when you view your emotional growth not as a failure, but as a masterpiece undergoing final refinement.
- Prayer: "Master Architect, thank You for loving me enough to smooth out my rough edges. Forgive me for holding onto the jagged seams of bitterness, anger, and quick-tempered speech. I welcome the refining work of Your Holy Spirit today. Patch the hidden cracks in my heart, sand down my sharp reactions, and make my inner life a beautiful, seamless dwelling place for Your presence. Amen."
